Sylvia Mae Harrison, a beacon of love and faith, departed this earthly life on August 23, 2025, following an unforeseen accident. She was born on January 6, 1936, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to the late Beatrice and Henry Knox Sr. Sylvia's journey came to a peaceful close in Bakersfield, California, surrounded by the love of her family.A Christian by faith and practice, Sylvia's life was a testament to the grace and compassion she found in her Savior. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul CME Church, where her melodious voice and unwavering devotion uplifted many. As it is written, "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:23), Sylvia served her community with the same fervor she devoted to her faith.Sylvia's educational pursuits at Bakersfield College and Federicos College of Beauty were the foundation of her lifelong learning and service. She dedicated many years to nurturing young minds at Bessie E Owens Elementary School and volunteered her time generously at the Bakersfield Gleaners Food Bank. Sylvia's passion for singing was evident through her involvement with the Bakersfield Singers Association and the Blue Stars Singers, sharing her gift and touching hearts through music.Sylvia's interests were a reflection of her love for others, as she found joy in singing, sewing, cooking, and church service. Her hands were rarely still, as they were often busy preparing meals for family gatherings or crafting beautiful garments. Sylvia believed in the power of serving others, and it is through her acts of kindness that her spirited and passionate nature will be most remembered.Preceded in death by her parents; Husband Yacoub Tauheed Salahuddin; siblings Ethel, Jeb, Bernice, Cleamtine, Henry Jr., Tyree, Robert, and Jimmy Knox; daughters Claudia Cross, Carol Frutos, Sylvia Mannings; and sons Glen and Michael Mannings, Sylvia's legacy of faith and love lives on through her surviving family. She leaves behind her beloved siblings Theola, Louella, Dolores, Mary and husband Michael Wofford, Johnny 'car killa' Knox; her cherished children Edna and Paul Mannings of Bakersfield, California, and John Harrison and wife Jennifer of Santa Maria, California. Sylvia's memory will also be treasured by her adoring grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense joy to her life.Sylvia's life was a beautiful embodiment of the well-known quote by St. Francis of Assisi, "For it is in giving that we receive." Her selfless nature and boundless love were her greatest gifts to us all.As we bid farewell to Sylvia Mae Harrison, we celebrate a life rich in faith, family, and community. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who knew her, and her memory will be cherished in the hearts of many. Though she has left our sight, she remains forever woven into the fabric of our lives.
