Obituary

Janet Harmon Murphy (Janet Lorraine Harmon) was born in February 1929 in Mitchell, South Dakota to Leo B and Ruth (Henrietta) Harmon. She passed peacefully on June 25, 2024 with family by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo Murphy, one son, Jeffrey Murphy, a brother, Jerry Harmon, and her parents. She is survived a by brother Joe Harmon, son Steven Murphy (Cathy), daughter Christine Bradley (Mike), three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Janet's father was an active board member for the Corn Palace in Mitchell and Janet worked many jobs through her young years applying the corn to the current year's design, as an usher, and more. She left Mitchell to attend the University of Michigan and later transferred to the University of Colorado where she obtained a bachelor's of Library Sciences degree. Later she would attain a Master's of Library Science degree.

While on a double date with her roommate at the University of Colorado she met a dashing young man named Leo (Pat) Murphy. They dated, then married in 1953 when Leo completed his military service. After his military service, they began a family and moved to California. First to Ridgecrest where Leo obtained his first teaching position and in 1960 they moved to San Diego and bought their forever home overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Janet had 3 children Jeffrey, Steven, and Christine and three grandchildren Patrick, Lexi and Marty. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She began a career when her youngest child started school. She was a librarian and faculty member at the University of San Diego where she worked until her retirement.

Janet was raised Catholic and practiced her faith every day. She was an active member of the St Agnes church in San Diego.

Her Life Partner and husband passed in December of 2020. Janet came to Bakersfield in June 2021 to be closer to her daughter and was lovingly cared for by the staff at Pacifica Senior Living Memory Care until her death in June 2024. Her remains will return to San Diego for a memorial and burial at Mission San Luis Rey Cemetery alongside her husband on July 15th, 2024.
